The statewide 2003 Home Energy Investigation Contest was a great success! On May 2, 2003, at the Boettcher Mansion atop Lookout Mountain in Golden, twenty-eight student teams representing thirteen schools from around Colorado met to share what they had learned through their investigation of home energy use and efficiency.
A distinguished team of judges selected winners from across Colorado. Plainview High School in Sheridan Lake and Mt. Garfield Middle School in Grand Junction won top honors in the high school and middle school divisions. In the high school category, Salida High School finished second and Grand Valley High School in Parachute third. In the middle school category, another team from Mt. Garfield Middle School won second place, and Hamilton Middle School in Denver won third place.
Director Rick Grice of the Governor's Office of Energy Management and Conservation read a proclamation, signed by the Governor, declaring May 2nd as Home Energy Investigation Day in Colorado. Every student in attendance received a certificate, signed by Governor Owens. Winning team members each received cash prizes of $100, $75 or $50. More than 20 homes selected by the student teams will receive energy efficiency upgrades. The Home Energy Investigation was made possible by support from the Colorado Governor's Office of Energy management and Conservation; the Colorado Energy Assistance Foundation; Xcel Energy Foundation, Accent Windows; and more than a dozen other sponsors. More information on the Home Energy Investigation and all of our sponsors is on the K12 Energy Education section of this website.
